Conte issues injury update on Tottenham defender Romero

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has
moved to allay fears of weeks-long injury layoff for Cristian Romero.

Reports emerged on
Wednesday evening that the Argentine could face up to a month on the sidelines
after suffering an injury in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea on Sunday.

As reported by Standard Sport on Thursday morning,
the player was hopeful of a quicker return to action, a view Conte appears to
agree with.

“He had a
little problem during the game against Chelsea, in the final part of the
game,” Conte explained to reporters on Thursday afternoon.

“But it’s a
little problem.

“After the
game he started to feel a bit of pain in his adductor. We checked on him and,
honestly, the player wanted to be available [to face Wolves on Saturday] but in
this situation – we have a lot of games to play – it would be stupid to take
risks.

“For this
reason, for the game against Wolves he’s not available.”

It is a more
positive diagnosis than first feared for Romero, and the Conte was also upbeat
about Oliver Skipp’s return from injury.

“Good news
about Skipp,” he continued. “Today or tomorrow, he’s going to run
again. It’s good news as since January he has had problems and now I think he
will be ready quickly.

“We need his
performance. He’s a really good guy. He’s suffering a lot to stay outside [the
squad] but for the period we go to play a lot of games we’ll have him
available, which is good news for us.”
