Cesc Fabregas, has chosen to draw the curtain on his illustrious footballing career at the age of 36. With countless trophies, mesmerizing assists, and unrivaled creativity in his repertoire, Fabregas leaves behind an indelible mark on the beautiful game.
The 2010 World Cup winner made the announcement on Twitter, one year into a two-year contract he signed last summer with Italian second-division team Como.
“It is with great sadness that the time has come for me to hang up my playing boots,” Fabregas said.
A product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, Fabregas burst onto the scene as a young prodigy, catching the eye of some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Wenger’s Arsenal swooped in to secure his services, providing a platform for the young Spaniard to showcase his exquisite skills. During his time in London, Fabregas became the artistic heart of the Gunners, thriving in his role as the chief orchestrator.
The mercurial playmaker then made a triumphant return to his boyhood club, Barcelona, amid much fanfare. Joining forces with the likes of Xavi and Iniesta, Fabregas formed a midfield trident that was the envy of every team in Europe. Together, they steered Barcelona to numerous domestic and continental triumphs, playing a mesmerizing brand of football that left their opponents spellbound.
He was also a part of the Spain teams that won back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
At Barcelona he won the 2012-13 Spanish league title but left the club to return to the Premier League with Chelsea a year later, helping the Blues to the league crown in 2015 and 2017.
He moved to French league club Monaco in 2019, where he played 68 times before signing for Como last summer.
“From my first days at Barca, Arsenal, Barca again, Chelsea, Monaco and Como, I will treasure them all,” Fabregas wrote. “From lifting the World Cup, the Euros, to winning everything in England and Spain and nearly all the European trophies, it has been a journey that I’ll never forget.”
While it is the end of an era for football, Cesc Fabregas leaves behind a legacy that will transcend generations. A true visionary, conductor of play, and an artist on the field, his name will forever be associated with style, flair, and an unwavering love for the beautiful game.
