Aston Villa have reportedly rekindled their interest in Joao Felix, but would face competition from his boyhood club Benfica if Unai Emery sanctioned a move.

The 23-year-old forward does not want to return to Atletico Madrid this summer after spending last season on loan at Barcelona. Villa were in the mix to land Felix on loan in January 2023 when he joined Chelsea for the rest of the campaign.

Following his short stint in the Premier League, where he scored four goals in 16 appearances for the Blues, Felix featured regularly for Barca last term. The Portuguese recorded 10 goal contributions in 30 La Liga matches, as well as three goals and one assist in nine Champions League games.

But after his loan at the Nou Camp ended, his future is uncertain. According to Portuguese outlet Record, Felix wants his future decided by July 27.

Benfica are currently the frontrunners to re-sign the forward after he came through at The Eagles’ academy before joining Atletico in the summer of 2019 for £113m. Benfica are said to have offered €30m for 50 per cent ownership of Felix, which would make him the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

Villa have also emerged as an option for Felix, according to Diario Sport. They claim that Villa would take Felix on loan with an obligatory option to buy him next summer, which would also allow him to maintain a similar salary to what he currently earns at Atletico.
