Goodbye Sergio: Gomez leaves Manchester City

Manchester City’s Spanish defender Sergio Gomez has left the club to join Real Sociedad in a permanent deal. Gomez joined the Blues in 2022 in a £10m deal from Anderlecht but struggled to establish himself in the first team.

During his first season at the Etihad Stadium, the Spaniard made just 12 Premier League appearances and just five in the Champions League as City secured the European treble. Last season, his appearances were limited to just 15 in all competitions and overall, Gomez played just 38 matches in total.

A left-back, Gomez made his debut as City came from 2-0 down to beat Crystal Palace 4-2 and made his Champions League debut in a 4-0 away win at Sevilla. Unfortunately, the defender found his game time limited with manager Pep Guardiola changing the playing style, with mainly centre-backs fulfilling the defensive duties, meaning Gomez was surplus to requirements. He joins the Spanish side for around £8m.

Speaking after the transfer was confirmed, Gomez thanked the City staff for the opportunity to play for the Blues.

“It’s time to leave Manchester City but I’d like to thank everyone at the CFA for their support and guidance during my time at the Club. Being part of such a talented, ambitious and successful squad was a true honour and winning a host of major trophies, including the Treble, is something I will never forget and will always look back fondly on.

“I am excited for this new adventure but I wish Pep Guardiola and the players every success in the future.”
