West Ham United have announced young midfielder Freddie Potts has joined Portsmouth on a season-long loan.
The Hammers announced the move on their official website [26 August] that will see the 20-year-old spend the 2024/25 season at Fratton Park.
Potts will continue his development in the Championship after a successful spell in League One last season with Wycombe Wanderers.West Ham United loan out Freddie PottsJulen Lopetegui has bolstered his midfield options this summer and, as the club pursues a deal for Paris Saint-Germain’s Carlos Soler [Sean Whetstone], Potts is best served spending another year gaining first-team experience away from East London.
The midfielder leaped forward in his development last term, making 36 league appearances for Wycombe with two goals and two assists and won the Player of the Year award as he helped the side reach the EFL Trophy final.
Still far off challenging the likes of Tomas Soucek and Guido Rodriguez for a spot in the senior side, a move to Portsmouth is ideal for all parties and will serve his development both on and off the pitch this season.
He featured twice for the Irons during the Europa League Conference winning campaign in the 2022/23 season.While he was not vital towards the triumph, his minutes on the pitch were still enough to earn him a medal.
However, Portsmouth are poised for a relegation battle in the Championship this term, and he will need to prove not only that he can perform in the second tier but he has the mental strength to withstand the pressure of representing a side likely fighting for survival.
