Relegation-threatened Parma said Tuesday that they have appointed former AS Roma, Inter and Romania defender Cristian Chivu their new coach.
The 44-year-old succeeds Fabio Pecchia, who was sacked after Sunday’s 1-0 home defeat to Roma left Parma third-from-bottom in Serie A.
Pecchia, 51, led Parma to promotion from the second tier last season but he paid the price for the team’s poor form, after they picked up just two points from their last seven games.
It is Chivu’s first job as the head coach of a senior side after several years with Inter’s academy.
He takes charge of his first training session on Tuesday.
