China suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Saudi Arabia in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Qualifier on the road in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Thursday, continuing to struggle at the bottom of Group C.
The decisive moment came five minutes into the second half, when Saudi midfielder Salem Al-Dawsari found the net from close range, capitalizing on a rebound after Chinese goalkeeper Wang Dalei had made a valiant effort to block an initial shot.
China’s task became even more challenging just before halftime, as Lin Liangming was shown a red card for a reckless kick to the face of Hassan Kadish. The incident resulted in a lengthy stoppage while Kadish received treatment, before being carried off the field on a stretcher.
Despite dominating possession, Saudi Arabia were unable to convert their chances, with a first-half effort from Faisal Al Ghamdi ruled out by Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for a handball in the build-up, further compounding their frustrations.
China still have only six points after seven games and will next host Australia in Hangzhou on Tuesday, looking to turn their fortunes around.
In the same group, Japan beat Bahrain 2-0 at home, sealing their qualification for the main draw at next year’s World Cup.
