Though Bayer Leverkusen’s chances of successfully defending their Bundesliga title had been in serious doubt for quite some time, last night’s 1-1 draw against St. Pauli effectively sealed the deal.
The lone point gained at the Millerntor – combined with Bayern Munich’s win this weekend – leaves Leverkusen eight points behind Bayern with four matches remaining.
Head coach Xabi Alonso and striker Patrik Schick have conceded the title race.
“We have to be honest: the chance is gone,” Leverkusen’s Schick told DAZN last night.
“We’ve dropped two points again. Quite frankly, our performances in recent games hasn’t been good enough. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out this season. But second place isn’t bad either. Last season was incredible. This season isn’t like last season.” “Arithmetically there’s still a chance,” Alonso added at the post-match press conference. “But we must be realistic. The chances are slim. Too many draws this season. We just have to behave professionally until the campaign is over.”
