Barcelona are expected to make an effort to re-sign Joao Cancelo this summer, but Manchester City’s stance of prioritising a sale means that their chances of bringing the Portuguese defender back to Catalonia are looking slim. As such, alternative options are likely to be looked at, and a familiar face appears to be on the list of sporting director Deco.
As reported by CaughtOffside, Barcelona are said to be considering a move for Emerson Royal, whom they sold to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2021. The Brazilian right-back is set to leave the Londoners before the transfer window closes.
AC Milan currently lead the race for Emerson’s signature, and they recently had a €14m offer rejected by Spurs. They are expected to try again in the coming weeks.
If the only chance of Emerson leaving Spurs is via a permanent deal, then this is a non-starter for Barcelona. There’s little to no chance that the Catalans spent close to €20m on a backup right-back, especially considering that they already have Hector Fort and Julian Araujo as alternative options to Jules Kounde.
