Having suffered two, two-goal defeats in their first two games at Euro 2024, Hungary needed a win against Scotland tonight, in the final group stage match, to have any hope of advancing to the knockout round.
Scotland were in a very similar situation as well, coming in with a point but needing something more than just another draw. But only one team seemed to actually want to win this game, and it were not Steve Clarke’s charges.
They did defend well however, which meant that Hungary needed nearly every last second to find the winner, Kevin Csoboth scoring in the 10th minute of stoppage time: the latest goal (in regulation) in tournament history. (There were 10 minutes added-on at the end due largely to Barnabás Varga getting knocked out cold and fracturing his cheekbone in a scary collision with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn.)
It was the first international goal of Csoboth’s career, and just the second win at a major tournament for Hungary in the last 50 years, and it kicked off wild celebrations among the fans in the stands as well as back home. Thankfully, Sallai stayed just onside in the build-up.
In the Hungarian broadcast, the goal was amusingly celebrated by the announcer with a reference to the movie “Home Alone”, yelling KEVIN! at the top of his lungs, and then adding that not only the burglars need to be afraid (the Hungarian title for the movie is “Reszkessetek, betörők!”, which translates to “Be afraid, burglars!” or more literally, “Tremble, burglars!”). Somehow it made perfect sense in the moment.
Hungary thus finish with three points but a goal difference of (-3), and now face an anxious wait for the results in the other groups over the next few days. It’s going to be very close; at the previous tournament, only one team advanced with three points and they had a better goal difference (-1).
In the day’s other match, Germany also scored in stoppage time to draw 1-1 with Switzerland and claim top spot in Group A. They will face the runner-up in Group C in the Round of 16, who could be England if they don’t get their act together. Switzerland will meanwhile face the runner-up from Group B, who are likely to be Italy.
