Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard faces lengthy injury absence

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard will be out "for a while" with an ankle injury he suffered on international duty with Norway, manager Mikel Arteta said on Wednesday. Odegaard twisted his ankle in Norway's Nations League match against Austria earlier this month. His national team doctor had suggested he would be sidelined for a "minimum of three weeks". "After everything was scanned, they showed that there was some damage, especially in one of the ligaments in the ankle so we're going to miss him," Arteta told reporters ahead of Arsenal's Champions League opener against Atalanta on Thursday. "I don't want to (put a timeframe on it) because I am not a doctor but it is something quite significant so we're going to lose him for a while -- hopefully not months, but let's see." Arsenal, ...

Liverpool boss Arne Slot accused of ‘making mistake Jurgen Klopp would never have made’

Richard Keys believes Arne Slot underestimated Nottingham Forest at the weekend - something former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp would never have done. The Dutchman, who succeed Klopp in the summer, tasted defeat for the first time since taking the top job at Anfield as the Reds fell to a shock a 1-0 loss against Nuno Espirito Santo's side. Liverpool named the same XI that beat Manchester United 3-0 prior to the international break, though they had been on international duty beforehand. And Keys reckons that was a sign of naivety from Slot, whose predecessor would have known better. Writing for his blog, Keys said: “It’s been suggested Slot got it wrong because he picked 11 starters who’d been on international duty. If it was an error I don’t think Klopp would’ve made it. H...

Jorginho: Arsenal unfazed by Haaland’s form

Arsenal players are unfazed by Manchester City striker Erling Haaland's goal-scoring rampage, midfielder Jorginho said vouching for the north London side's confidence ahead of Sunday's Premier League clash with City. City have had a perfect campaign in the league so far, while Arsenal secured three wins and a draw. Fresh off nine goals in four league games, including two hat tricks, Haaland has scored 99 goals from 103 appearances for City across all competitions. The Norway striker will aim for his century in Wednesday's Champions League clash against Inter Milan, while Arsenal begin their European campaign at Atalanta on Thursday and prepare to meet City at the Etihad on the Sunday. "Erling scoring again ... it is starting to make us laugh," the 32-year-old Italian said. "We look because...

Newcastle United midfielder ruled out until October following surgery

Newcastle United midfielder Jamie Miley, currently on loan at Newport County, has been ruled out until October. The 20-year-old joined the League Two side during the final week of the summer transfer window and made his debut in a 2-1 defeat against Cheltenham Town in EFL Trophy. He limped off 20 minutes before full-time, however, and missed the 4-1 loss versus Port Vale a few days later. Newport boss Nelson Jardim hoped the injury was “nothing” but has since confirmed Miley will be sidelined until next month after having surgery on a hernia. Miley uploaded a photo to Instagram from a hospital bed on Thursday night captioned “surgery done, back on the mend”, although the exact nature of his injury wasn’t known until Jardim’s update on Saturday. With younger brother Lewis sidelined because...

For the first time this season, attention now temporarily switches to one of the two domestic cup competitions. Angel Gomes is having a great year Gomes’ contract with Lille runs out next summer and a number of clubs in the Premier League, including Spurs, are thought to be monitoring the midfielder’s situation. Unbeaten Newcastle stage second-half comeback to record Wolves win

Newcastle United fought back from a halftime deficit with two long-range strikes in the space of five minutes to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Molineux on Sunday and move into third place in the Premier League. Fabian Schar’s speculative effort took a deflection to draw Newcastle level after Wolves captain Mario Lemina’s 36th-minute goal had put the hosts ahead at the break as they chased a first league success of the season. But while there might have been an element of fortune about Schar’s 75th-minute goal, there was no luck involved as Harvey Barnes thrashed home a spectacular winner five minutes later. Both efforts came from outside the penalty area and dramatically turned around the outcome after struggling Wolves had dominated most of the encounter.Wolves remain in the bottom ...

Ex-Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi scored the winning goal in the game but Elanga was another to impress on the day for the visiting team. Liverpool had the vast majority of the possession but couldn't find a way through to goal, only then to be punished at the other end on the counter-attack. The Gunners are looking to add more quality and depth to their midfield and they have identified the La Liga midfielder as a potential target. The likes of Thomas Partey and Jorginho will be free agents next summer and Mikel Arteta is already looking at potential alternatives, as per Football Insider. Guerra has the quality to play for a big club like Arsenal and he has the technical attributes to thrive in the Premier League as well. The midfielder has a £100 million release clause in his contract but it is highly unlikely that any club would be willing to pay that kind of money for the 21-year-old. Arsenal will be looking to negotiate a more reasonable fee for the technically gifted midfielder and it remains to be seen ...

Chelsea's gargantuan squad, filled to the brim with young talent, will naturally take time to adjust to a new and distinct style. However, the Italian may not be afforded a significant adjustment period, which is why it's so important that he tops up his support from the club's hierarchy with positive performances and convincing results.
