Under-fire Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is expected to make multiple changes to his starting lineup for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Burnley at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils suffered an embarrassing EFL Cup second-round exit on Wednesday, losing on penalties to fourth-tier side Grimsby Town, with Amorim making eight changes to the team that began the 1-1 draw at Fulham in the Premier League last weekend.

Andre Onana was recalled between the sticks, but the mistake-prone goalkeeper did not cover himself in glory against Grimsby and Amorim may decide to recall Altay Bayindir – who has also endured a shake start to the new season – or Tom Heaton.

Harry Maguire scored a late equaliser to force the midweek tie to penalties, but he could be replaced in the three-man backline on Saturday, with Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Luke Shaw all pushing for a recall at centre-back.

While Patrick Dorgu is expected to continue at left wing-back, either Diogo Dalot or Amad Diallo is set to start on the opposite flank, as Amorim weighs up whether to select Casemiro or Manuel Ugarte in centre-midfield alongside returning captain Bruno Fernandes.

Mason Mount is another midfield option who could also be deployed in the front three, but Matheus Cunha is likely to be joined in attack by fellow new recruits Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko – Mbeumo scored his first United goal in midweek, while Sesko is pushing to make his full PL debut after starting against Grimsby.

On the injury front, Lisandro Martinez remains sidelined as he continues to recover from a long-term knee issue, while Noussair Mazraoui is closing in on a return from a thigh problem, but Saturday’s game will likely come too soon for the defender.

Manchester United possible starting lineup: Bayindir; Yoro, De Ligt, Shaw; Amad, Casemiro, Fernandes, Dorgu; Mbeumo, Sesko, Cunha
