Harry Maguire breaks silence on Man Utd U-turn after missing US pre-season tour

Manchester United’s Harry Maguire has assured fans he will be joining the Reds’ pre-season tour, despite missing their flight to the United States on Tuesday.

The ex-Leicester City defender was subbed in at half-time during Saturday’s 0-0 stalemate with Leeds United, only to be swapped out for Tyler Fredricson later in the match.

Tuesday afternoon brought news that the 32 year old wouldn’t be boarding the plane to the US with his teammates. The Reds are jetting off to Chicago for the Premier League summer series, featuring matches against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton.

However, Maguire has put any worries about his no-show to bed with a statement on his Instagram stories.

“All is fine now,” he reassured. “I will be travelling tomorrow (Wednesday) to meet up with the squad. Thanks for your concern.”

When quizzed about the upcoming American tour, Reds gaffer Amorim shared his excitement about the North American trip, reports the Manchester Evening News.

“[Meeting fans] it [was] the same in the last tour,” he reminisced. “We feel that they [the fans] deserve more in every aspect so we are going to give.

“I think it is our responsibility to interact with our fans and we have that in our group.

“We are going to do that. And also in that department, we are going to be closer, [that’s] what Manchester United should be.”

Amorim’s squad will be striving to hit peak fitness before their challenging Premier League opener against Arsenal at home on 17 August. United also have a tough run of league matches against Manchester City and Chelsea in the first two months of the 2025/26 season.

New signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha will travel. Mbeumo only completed his £65m move from Brentford on Monday, while Cunha posted pictures around the recent birth of his second child.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana and defender Lisandro Martinez will be involved as they continue their recovery from recent injuries.

Manchester United play West Ham at MetLife Stadium, which hosted the recent Club World Cup final, in their first Premier League Summer Series game on 26 July. They play Bournemouth in Chicago on 30 July and Everton in Atlanta on 3 August.
