Everton suffer nightmare blow as key star gets injured in training

Everton have been dealt a blow on the eve of the season after centre back Jarrad Branthwaite injured a hamstring in training.

The 23-year old is understood to have aggravated the same hamstring in his right thigh that saw him limp of in the final game at Goodison against Southampton in May.

The England international sustained it during routine sprinting drills and there are fears he could be out until the end of September.

Branthwaite agreed a new contract in the summer amid interest from Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City.

His commitment was key for David Moyes as he strives to build a competitive squad for the new campaign.

Everton have been gently easing James Tarkowski back into action following his hamstring surgery earlier in the summer.

They also have Jake O’Brien and Michael Keane but Moyes has been eager to add another defender and at least one more full-back amid other fitness concerns.

He has been determined to add a right winger as well following the addition of Jack Grealish on loan.

In total, Moyes has been appealing for the club to make at least six more signings to bolster a threadbare squad ahead of Monday’s kick off against Leeds United, who are poised to sign former Toffees striker Dominic Calvert Lewin on a three-year contract.
