Bundesliga updates: Serge Gnabry move talk

Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry wears many hats for his club. Left wing, right wing. Harry Kane’s presumptive backup after Thomas Müller’s departure — and then no longer, after Nicolas Jackson’s arrival.

His latest role, in the wake of Jamal Musiala’s injury, has been to inherit the central playmaking position behind the striker.

It’s a fluid assignment, involving plenty of exchanges, especially with right-sided inverting winger Michael Olise, and it’s one Gnabry has taken up with aplomb.

“There’s more space centrally, which has worked very well recently,” Gnabry explained in his recent Bild interview (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

“I played there as a youth player, and also with the national team. It feels like nothing new. It’s a blessing and a curse to be able to play multiple positions. I can contribute my qualities on the wing, at No. 10, and at No. 9.”

A blessing and a curse, indeed. Gnabry’s versatility has been a boon to his squad in a time of need — but it has also not allowed him to settle and own a role, the way Olise and newcomer Luis Díaz has on either wing.

But Gnabry has started the season strong, with a goal and three assists already (including the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup win over VfB Stuttgart). The 30-year-old’s many hats includes that of a chef’s — and for the moment, he’s cooking.
