Fiorentina fight to keep De Gea after AS Monaco interest

David De Gea of ACF Fiorentina gestures during the UEFA Conference League 2024/25 Semi Final Second Leg match between ACF Fiorentina and Real Betis Balompie at Stadio Artemio Franchi on May 8, 2025 in Florence, Italy. David De Gea saw his career revitalised by Fiorentina, but now the club must fight to keep him after Fabrizio Romano reported an approach from AS Monaco. The 34-year-old had been out of action for a year after his contract with Manchester United expired in July 2023, seeing him prefer to sit out rather than sign for a side he didn’t appreciate. He did not look at all rusty, making a series of spectacular saves for Fiorentina this season, which helped them to reach the Conference League semi-final and finish sixth in Serie A. AC Milan fall at Fiorentina after De Gea’s penalty heroics

AC Milan slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Fiorentina on Sunday after having two penalties saved by star man David De Gea, while Juventus fell further behind Serie A leaders Napoli on a day of spot-kick drama. The 27-year-old’s winner was made possible by De Gea pulling off two incredible stops to deny Theo Hernandez and then Tammy Abraham from scoring penalties in a superb display from the former Spain goalkeeper. Those saves contributed to Milan missing the chance to move second above champions Inter Milan and Juventus, with the latter held 1-1 by Cagliari due to Razvan Marin’s late penalty. “We need to work out why we p...

David de Gea reaches ‘verbal agreement’ with Serie A club

David de Gea is at last set to return to professional football after reaching what is described as a "verbal agreement" with Serie A side Fiorentina. De Gea's last game was the 2023 FA Cup final for Manchester United, leaving the club as a free agent just weeks later following the withdrawal of a contract offer and failure to agree alternative terms. At 33, De Gea is by no means old for a goalkeeper, but his departure from Old Trafford after 11 seasons left him without a team. The Spaniard wasn't short of offers last summer but resisted the lure of the Saudi Pro League in the hope of landing a competitive project in Europe. It turned into a whole season out of the professional game, one in which De Gea used the time to rest, engage in hobbies and outside business interests, as well as k...
