Mauricio Pochettino: ‘Donald Trump asked if US can win the World Cup’

ORLANDO, FLORIDA - JANUARY 22: Head coach Mauricio Pochettino of the United States waves to fans prior to a game against the Costa Rica at Inter&Co Stadium on January 22, 2025 in Orlando, Florida. Mauricio Pochettino may now be the most important figure in American soccer, as the country gets ready to stage the biggest World Cup in history, but that hasn’t yet granted him any special status. He still hasn’t got a green card, having taken the job in September 2024. “We are waiting,” he laughs. “The last time, in Los Angeles, we were waiting one hour and a half in the queue!” He then offers a quick caveat. “I am not complaining because if I complain, they are going to kill me!” The statement was in response to whether he feels like a celebrity in a country where that wattage is greater t...

Why USA coach Mauricio Pochettino is ‘worried’ about Christian Pulisic

Christian Pulisic has been in fantastic form so far this season at AC Milan, but his new US men's national team boss Mauricio Pochettino has revealed he's 'worried' about the attacker. The American has established himself as one of the first names on the Milan team sheet, and has six goals and two assists thus far while starting each of his team's nine games in all competitions. But it's that sort of workload that is giving Pochettino some concerns, as he shared Wednesday ahead of the USMNT's matchup with Panama on Saturday. 'He's playing every single game, every single minute. That is also a thing that we are a little bit worried [about],' he told reporters. 'Sometimes we need to protect [Pulisic]. We'll see, because he arrived a little bit tired.' 'He continued, '[We need] to build a ver...

Pochettino named new boss of US with 2026 World Cup hosting in mind

Former Tottenham and Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has been named as the new manager of the United States men’s team. The Argentine replaces Gregg Berhalter, who was sacked in July following the USA’s group-stage elimination from the Copa America. The United States will co-host the 2026 World Cup along with Canada and Mexico. They are ranked 16th in the world by Fifa, one place below Euro 2024 quarter-finalists Switzerland. Pochettino’s appointment means the US men’s and women’s teams are both now managed by former Chelsea bosses, after Emma Hayes took charge of the women’s team earlier this year. Pochettino, 52, said it was an opportunity “I couldn’t pass up”. “The decision to join US Soccer wasn’t just about football for me; it’s about the journey that this team and this country...

Pochettino to become new US national team coach

Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly agreed terms to become the new coach of the United States national team, according to multiple reports on Thursday. The Athletic and ESPN reported that unnamed sources confirmed Pochettino, who parted ways with English Premier League side Chelsea in May, would replace Gregg Berhalter as boss. Pochettino, 52, would arrive as the United States prepares to co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada. Pochettino left Chelsea after finishing sixth in the Premier League in his only season in charge, after previous stints with Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham. Reports said the deal was struck after multiple conversations with US Soccer Federation technical director Matt Crocker, and that no contract has been signed nor has the federation's board ...
