Everton have reportedly made a handsome offer to
out-of-favour Tottenham Hotspur attacker Steven Bergwijn.
According to De Telegraaf, Everton have approached Tottenham Hotspur winger
Steven Bergwijn with a lucrative offer, which is ‘much better’ than the
proposals from other interested parties. The Netherlands international was
reportedly poised for a return to his home country with Ajax, but a delay
in the transfer has allowed Everton to step in.
Bergwijn has been linked with a summer exit after
failing to cement a starting spot at Tottenham. He arrived in January 2020 from
PSV Eindhoven and has since played just a bit-part role at the club, making 83
appearances for them, most of which have come from the bench.
With Spurs eager to strengthen in the attacking
department, Bergwijn’s exit is imminent, but the north London club are yet to
agree on a deal with potential suitors. Tottenham are demanding €25 million for the winger, and Ajax have ‘approached’ the
price, but the internal chain of command has slowed down the process.
Everton have now stepped in to offer Bergwijn better
terms than the Dutch giants, and are also reportedly prepared to match
Tottenham’s valuation of the player. Voetbal International have also confirmed that Everton
are seriously interested in the winger.
As per the Telegraaf report, the 24-year-old prefers
a return to the Netherlands with Ajax offering him Champions League football,
which he will not get at Everton. But the delay on Ajax’s part could test the
winger’s patience, and with Everton offering better terms, the player might
decide to stay in England.
The 24-year-old played just 871 minutes of club
football in the recently-concluded season and was used all across the front
line by Conte. That doesn’t look like improving in the upcoming season,
especially with Tottenham targeting a double swoop for Everton attacking duo Richarlison
and Anthony Gordon. But his game time will improve massively at both
the aforementioned clubs.
As for Bergwijn, he could serve as a direct
replacement for Richarlison at Everton, with the Brazilian almost certain to
depart Goodison Park. However, with his heart set on a return to the
Netherlands, it is up to Frank Lampard & co. to convince him to decide
otherwise this summer.
