While ex-Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel suffered from a dearth of defenders last season, a Bayern man was making waves at Leverkusen, scoring important last minute goals.
Yes, Josip Stanisic had a very successful loan spell at Bayer Leverkusen, German champions Bayer Leverkusen lest we forget. Bayern perhaps suddenly remembered that the Croatian international, a product of their own youth academy, had produced a masterclass against Kylian Mbappé in Bayern’s tie against PSG under Julian Nagelsmann in the UEFA Champions League in the 2022/23 season.

After Aleksandar Pavlović’s rise this season, Bayern would do well to have a few more names who are from the youth academy in the team. If the likes of Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka and Kingsley Coman, for so long the players who had leadership roles at Bayern, leave, some players will need to step up, especially as the careers of two veterans, Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer, might be drawing to a close.
