Joshua Zirkzee of the Netherlands enters the field during the Semi-Final – UEFA EURO 2024 match between Netherlands and England at BVB Stadion Dortmund on July 10, 2024 in Dortmund, Germany. |
Manchester United are set to complete their first signing of the 2024/25 season, and the club’s first transfer since INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe took over football operations at Old Trafford. Joshua Zirkzee, 23, is set to join the club from Bologna on a five-year contract pending a medical on Friday, per multiple reports.
United will pay a total of €42.5m in fees over the next three years to complete the transfer.
Zirkzee has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for a couple of weeks. The move was able to progress after the Netherlands were eliminated in the semi-finals of the UEFA European Championships by England via a 90th-minute Ollie Watkins goal.
Zirkzee was brought up in the Bayern Munich youth setup, playing 32 times for Bayern Munich II as a youngster before seeing limited action for the senior side. He scored four goals in 17 appearances before a series of loans to Parma and Anderlecht. His 18 goals for the Belgian side caught the eye of Bologna, who signed him in 2022.
Zirkzee’s production in Serie A picked up in 2023/24, and though he scored just 12 goals he became an important facilitator in Thiago Motta’s team.
AC Milan and Juventus were also in contention for the Dutchman’s services, but United’s offer appears to have won out in the end and the Reds added additional payments over the next three seasons to Bologna to help get the deal over the line.
