Newcastle United are reportedly closing in on a transfer agreement for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, potentially bringing one of the summer’s longest-running transfer sagas to an end through this weekend.
Guehi, who has been a standout performer for Palace since joining from Chelsea in 2021, is now on the brink of a move to St. James’ Park according to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie.
The 24-year-old defender has attracted interest from several top clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United, but it appears that Newcastle is set to secure his signature. According to Downie, Newcastle and Crystal Palace are nearing an agreement after weeks of negotiations.
The proposed deal is expected to be in the region of £65 million plus add-ons, making it a club-record transfer for Newcastle, surpassing the £63 million paid for Alexander Isak two seasons ago.
There is cautious optimism that the deal could be finalized by the weekend, with Palace reportedly accepting that it would be advantageous to cash in on Guehi now, given his strong performances at EURO 2024 and throughout the last Premier League season.
Should the deal go through, it would be a significant addition to Newcastle’s defense, particularly following last season’s injury crises that left the club relying on fringe players to fill key roles.
In the event that the Guehi transfer falls through, Newcastle has identified Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba and Chelsea’s Axel Disasi as potential alternatives.
