Alisson Becker has shared his delight at being named in Liverpool’s travelling squad for Tuesday’s Champions League tie at Girona – two months after his last appearance for the Reds. The Brazilian has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury in Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Crystal Palace on October 5, with Caoimhin Kelleher deputising admirably in the two months since.
However, Alisson has been named in the Reds’ 19-man squad for the Champions League league phase clash in Spain on Tuesday night, where Arne Slot’s side will look to build on their impressive start to the revamped competition. And following the news, the 32-year-old shared a photo of him onboard Liverpool’s fight to Girona, captioned: “So happy to be back.”
Speaking before this weekend’s Merseyside derby against Everton was postponed, Slot said of Alisson’s condition: “It is only three injuries left with Diogo, Federico and Alisson close to being back, only Kostas [Tsimikas], Ibou [Konate] and Conor [Bradley] remain out longer.”
During the Brazilian’s absence, Kelleher has featured in all of the Premier League and Champions League games for the Reds, with his last outing coming in a 3-3 draw with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
However, he was at fault for Fabian Schar’s late equaliser, though head coach Slot was quick to jump to his defence.“It was on 1-0 where Joe Gomez made a mistake and he saved it and it could have been 2-0 so maybe he saved us a point so if we go 2-0 down you never know what happens,” said Slot.
“Unfortunately for Caoimhin if you make a mistake as a goalkeeper it is very difficult for someone else to cover it up, he has done that for us a few times when someone else has made a mistake.“He is in a good place but disappointed like all the others that we dropped points from a winning position.”
After Tuesday’s trip to Girona, the Reds return to the Premier League action on Saturday when they face Fulham at Anfield.
