Eddie Howe admits that Anthony Gordon a serious doubt for the weekend clash with Manchester United at St James’ Park – and Joe Willock may also be missing against the Red Devils too.
The Scouser missed the clash at the King Power Stadium as he recovers from a hip injury sustained in England’s 2-0 win over Albania in the World Cup qualifiers. Having served a three-match suspension, Gordon was free to play against Leicester City but is yet to even practice according to Eddie Howe.
When asked about Gordon’s availability for the Sunday afternoon clash with Man United, Howe said: “Anthony wasn’t close (to being available to face Leicester). He hasn’t been able to train with us yet.
“He’s still feeling the effects of that tackle with England. We hope that we may see him soon, but I’ve got no certainty on that.”
Newcastle had released a statement on Joe Willock’s absence for the 3-0 victory at Leicester last night. When asked if he could recover in time for the visit of the Red Devils, Howe did not sound confident.
He responded: “Joe’s concussion means I don’t think he will make the weekend.” Despite the blow of Gordon’s absence, Howe was thrilled to see Harvey Barnes get on the scoresheet.
He said: “Harvey has done really well. I think, naturally, he’s got better with games, like every player does.
“He’s got more confident, and it was important he scored tonight because he is a goalscorer and he needs to contribute in that way, being such an attacking player that he is.
“He also played his part in the first goal, which I loved, with a really good decision. He’s built a good relationship up with Tino (Livramento) alongside him, and I was really pleased with that part of the pitch. I thought he defended well as well, and that can never be underestimated.”
