Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah scored the goals inside six minutes, but Marcos Llorente – who famously scored twice at Anfield for Atletico in 2020 – controversially prodded the visitors back into the game during first-half injury time.
His deflected effort seemed to have earned a point nine minutes from time. However, Virgil van Dijk’s header in the second minute of stoppage time sealed the win and Atletico boss Diego Simeone was subsequently sent off.

Ahead of the Merseyside derby on Saturday lunchtime, only Curtis Jones features in the injury list.
The 24-year-old missed the trip to Burnley after sustaining a knock against Arsenal before the International break.
No timeframe has been given for his return, but the injury is not believed to be serious and there is hope he could return for the game against Everton.
